Alfred "Lex" Johnson, age 87 of the Wittenburg Community, Taylorsville, passed away at his residence on Tuesday, May 26, 2015. Lex was born to the late Peter E. and Blanch Echerd Johnson on Wednesday, April 4, 1928 in Alexander County. He was a member of Mt. Herman Baptist Church. He served as a deacon, Sunday School superintendant and teacher. He was a dedicated member of the Wittenburg Fire Department for 45 years and served as a member of the Alexander County School Board. He retired from Shuford Mills with 38 years of service and was then employed by Royale Comfort Seating for 22 years. He enjoyed watching the Atlanta Braves baseball, Carolina Tarheels basketball, talking on the phone to family & friends and being on the go. In the last two months he enjoyed viewing the yellow finches feeding outside his window. Lex was a sweet and loving husband, dad, grandfather, great-grandfather, and brother.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years Phyllis Jolly Johnson, a brother Ned Johnson, two sisters, Louise Pennell and Irene Johnson.

Lex leaves to cherish his memory his daughter, Pat Goble and husband Clyde of Taylorsville, two granddaughters, Kasey Johnson and husband Brandon of Taylorsville, Vicki Shipman of Hickory, great-grandchildren, Laney Johnson of Taylorsville, Hunter Bost of Myrtle Beach, SC, two brothers, Ben Johnson of Hixson, TN, Philip Johnson of the Philippines and Key Largo, FL, a sister, Kathryn Bowman of Taylorsville, and a number of nieces, nephews, and special caregivers.

Visitation will be Thursday, May 28, 2015 at 4:00 pm at Mt. Herman Baptist Church, with the funeral service following at 5:00 pm. The Rev. Paul Schronce, Rev. Taylor Miller, and Rev. Jamie Steele will officiate.

Burial will take place in the Macedonia Baptist Church Cemetery. Pallbearers include Lynn Fox, Leon Fox, William Johnson, Brandon Johnson, Hal Teague, Mike Jolly, Hunter Bost, Lee Goble, and Tyler Crouch.

In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorials be made to Hospice of Alexander County 50 Lucy Echerd Ln; Taylorsville, NC 28681.

The family wishes to express their sincere thanks to our many friends, family, caregivers, and Alexander County Hospice for all the cards, visits, food, flowers, and prayers. Everyone was so good to him during his illness and passing. May God richly bless each one of you.
