Alton Willard Rogers, age 90 of the Ellendale Community, Taylorsville, passed away in the Lutheran Home  Hickory West - Trinity Ridge on Sunday morning, December 8, 2013 after a period of declining health.  Born August 3, 1923 in Alexander County to the late Dr. Minter and Ruby Cavin Rogers,  he had been a lifelong member of Antioch Baptist Church where he had served as a church deacon, and a Sunday school teacher.  He was a retired custodian after over 30 years of service, from West Alexander Middle School.  He enjoyed camping, and spending time with his family.  Mr. Rogers was a Veteran of the United States Army, and served in World War II from 1943 - 1946.
Besides his parents, those preceding him in death are his wife Grace Little Rogers, two sons :  Alton Jr., and Dennis Rogers, and two brothers:  Clyde and Mervyn Rogers.
Those remaining to cherish his memories are two daughters:  Darlene Handy and husband James of the home; Marlene Scott and husband Randy of Taylorsville.  Two granddaughters: Krista Huss and husband Scott of Charlotte, and Kimberly Handy of Taylorsville.  Five grandsons:  Eric Rogers of Taylorsville, Chad Rogers of Hickory, Monte Rogers of Taylorsville, Andrew Scott of Conover, and Tyler Scott of Wilmington. Great-grandchildren include:  Ethan Rogers of Conover, Kaitlyn Huss of Charlotte and Caleb Handy of Taylorsville.  He also leaves behind one sister Glenda Rogers of Winston-Salem, two daughters-in-law:  Donna Rogers of Hickory, and Shelia Rogers of Taylorsville, as well as a number of nieces, nephews, and other family members.
Visitation for Mr. Rogers will take place at Antioch Baptist Church, Tuesday, December 10  from 6:30-8:00 pm.  Funeral services will be held Wednesday, December 11 at 3:00 pm in the church and burial will follow in the church cemetery.  Rev. Mark Morris and Rev. Dennis Spivey will officiate.
The grandsons will serve as Pallbearers.  Honorary Pallbearers will be Ethan Rogers and Caleb Handy.  Honorary Attendants will be Linda Bolick, Peggy Jolly, Debbie Martin, Judy Powers, Debbie Munday, and Kathy Rector.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Hospice of Catawba County @ 3975 Robinson Road, Newton, NC  28658.
Military rites will be afforded by DAV Post 84 and Hudson Post 9.
