Barry Gail Johnson, age 69, of Taylorsville passed away on Wednesday, November 6, 2013 at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center. Born in Iredell County on January 16, 1944 to Magdalene Jolly Johnson of Taylorsville and the late Aaron Spears Johnson. Barry graduated from Taylorsville High and Lenoir Rhyne College. He was a teacher for 34 years with the Alexander County School System. During that time he mainly taught 7th and 8th grade and was also an Assistant Principle for Hiddenite Elementary. His love, care and concern for his students extended beyond the classroom. Barry was a member at East Taylorsville Baptist Church. He was an avid gardener, as well as a lifelong advocate of Native American culture. He was on the Tribal Roles of the Eastern Band of the Shawnee Nation and was a gifted Native American Artist. Those left to cherish his memory include his wife: Martha Kerley Johnson of the home; daughters: Hannah Nance & husband Jeff of Conover, Maria Weatherman & husband Andy of Mooresville and Leah Lindquist & husband Noah of El Paso, Texas; grandchildren: Mason & Miley Nance of Conover and Bryce Weatherman of Mooresville; brother: Lynn C. Johnson & wife Glenda of Virginia Beach, Virginia; niece: Christy Chattleton of Raleigh and nephew: Wes Johnson of Virginia Beach, Virginia.
The family will receive friends on Friday, November 8, 2013 from 4:00 pm - 7:00 pm at East Taylorsville Baptist Church. Service will be held on Saturday, November 9, 2013 at 11:00 am at East Taylorsville Baptist Church with the Rev. Jamie Steele and Rev. Marion Powell officiating. Burial will follow at Mt. Herman Baptist Church Cemetery.  In Honor of Barry, memorials may be sent to East Taylorsville Baptist Church at PO Box 906; Taylorsville, NC 28681.
