Basil Lee Echerd, age 85, of Taylorsville, passed away at Caldwell Hospice & Palliative Care on Sunday, June 26, 2016. Basil was born on July 13, 1930 to the late Roscoe Columbus and Hattie Hammer Echerd in Alexander County. He was a lifelong member of Mt. Herman Baptist Church and was on the cemetery committee. He was in the United States Army and fought in the Korean Conflict. Basil retired after 40 years from Sipe Lumber Company. He served as Fire Chief for the Ellendale Fire Department and on the board of directors. In addition to his parents Basil was preceded in death by three sisters, Berdie Mooney, Mable Welborn, & Evelyn Kirby; and granddaughter Allisa Leigh Echerd.
Basil leaves to cherish his wife of 58 years, Maude Echerd of the home, two sons: Michael Echerd & wife Petra of Belgium, Wisconsin, and Roger Echerd & wife Lynn; daughter Elaine Echerd both of Taylorsville, three brothers: Paul, Larry, and Donald Echerd; sister Jeanette Knox, five grandchildren: Darin, Jessica, Suzanna, & Daniel Echerd, and Taylor Carter; three great grandchilren: Anna Sturgill, Adian, & Nora Echerd; and a host of nieces, nephews, and special friends.
Visitation will be Tuesday, June 28, 2016 from 1:00-3:00 pm at Mt. Herman Baptist Church. The funeral service will follow at 3:00 pm. The Rev. Paul Schronce will be officiating. Burial will take place in the church cemetery. Military rites provided by DAV post 84 of Taylorsville.
