Charles Melvin Wooten, age 64 of Asheville, NC ended his battle with cancer on January 6th, 2014 at Duke University Medical Center, surrounded by his loving family and friends. Charles was born in Wilkes County to Roy Madison Wooten and Pauline Brown Wooten. He graduated from East Wilkes High School in 1967. He served in Germany and Vietnam while in the Army. After his return from service, he worked for the Lowes' Companies and retired as a store manager. After retirement, he worked in Charleston as a tour guide and served as Flotilla commander in the Mt. Pleasant, SC Coast Guard Auxiliary. He served as the President for National Alliance on Mental Illness in Charleston, SC. After moving to Asheville, he worked for the Veterans Administration. He worked at Black Mtn. Campground in Burnsville, NC as manager for several years. Those left to cherish his memory: his wife, Marlene Hodges Wooten; 2 sons: Charles Loren Wooten and friend Katie and Phillip Brandon Wooten, all of Asheville. his mother, Pauline Wooten Spears of Roaring River; 3 brothers: Roger Brown (Mary Alice)and David Wooten (Kim) Of Taylorsville, and Roy Gerald Wooten (Sara) of Ronda; 2 sisters: Elogene Hodges (Gary) of Newport News, VA, and Barbara (Ronnie) of Roaring River, and a number of nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.
A military service will be held at 2 pm on Saturday, January 18, 2014 at Roaring River Baptist Church Cemetery; 312 White Plains Rd; Roaring River, NC 28669. Following the military service, the family will receive friends in the Roaring River Baptist Church fellowship hall.
