Chester “Scooter” Lee Grinton Jr., age 64, passed away Tuesday, December 13, 2022, at his home in Alexander County. He was born to the late Chester Lee Grinton Sr. and Ola Sue Rowe Grinton on July 12, 1958, in Alexander County. Mr. Grinton was a member of St. John Baptist Church where he served as an elect deacon for a number of years. He was a mentor to a lot of young children through the years. Mr. Grinton attended UNC and received a full scholarship for football or basketball. He also attended Lenoir-Rhyne University. He enjoyed golfing, football and basketball and was inducted into the Alexander County Sports Hall of Fame in 2013.
Including his parents, he is preceded in death by his grand-daughter, Kennedy Holmes.
Those left to cherish the memories of Chester include his wife of 42 years, Helen Grinton, daughter, Camilia Holmes (Bobby), son, DeChane Grinton and fiancé Zaria, sister, Bonita Grinton, three grandchildren, Faith Holmes, Chase Holmes, Maliyah Grinton, six god-children, a special niece, Dara Grinton, great-nephew, Jeremiah Whitaker, a number of aunts, uncles, and cousins.
A visitation will be held Monday, December 19, 2022, at Alexander Funeral Service from 6:00 pm to 7:30 pm. The funeral service will be held Tuesday, December 20, 2022, at Alexander Funeral Service at 2:00 pm. Burial will follow in the St. John Baptist Church Cemetery. Rev. John C. Rowe and Rev. Jeffrey Miller will officiate. Marcus Rowe, Kyle Linney, Jamie Campbell, Oliver Kasongo, John Paul Rowe, Brian Campbell, Terry Lackey Jr., Cameron Speaks, and Joshua Little will serve as pallbearers. John Williams, Frankie Watts, Jason Parker, Eddie Moose, Norman Howell, and Ernest Boston will serve as honorary pallbearers. Cousins will serve as flower girls.
