Clayton Devar Coffey, age 87, of Taylorsville, passed away on Sunday, October 16, 2016. Mr. Coffey was born in Watauga County on December 29, 1928 to the late Mack Donald and Bertha Ellen Anderson Coffey. He attended Temple Baptist Church in Stony Point. Mr. Coffey was a veteran of the United States Army. Mr. Coffey was known for being a master mechanic, he loved working on cars. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, watching westerns, and enjoyed old time music programs, especially "Song of the Mountain." Mr. Coffey retired from Southern Fasteners in Statesville where he worked as a header operator. He also worked for the railroad in Chicago, IL.
In addition to his parents Mr. Coffey was preceded in death by his first wife of 52 years, Elvera Anderson Coffey one son, Lee Allan Coffey and three brothers.
Mr. Coffey leaves to cherish his memory, his wife of 4 years, Hilda Dagenhart Payne Coffey, sons: Walter Gwen, Ronald Clayton & wife Monica, Lloyd Donald & wife Jeannette, Michael Dean & wife Crystal, and Brent Richard & wife Tamara; daughters: Wanda Joy Hollars and Renee Marie Greene; brother, J.D., sister, Retha, 19 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, and a number of nieces, nephews, and special friends.
Visitation will be Wednesday, October 19, 2016 from 1:00-3:00 pm at Alexander Funeral Service in Taylorsville. The funeral will follow in the Chapel. The Rev. Gary W. Jennings will be officiating the service. Burial will take place in the Taylorsville City Cemetery. Full military rites will be provided by DAV Ch. 84 of Taylorsville and Ch. 6 of Hudson. In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorials be made to Hospice of Iredell County, 2347 Simonton Rd., Statesville, NC 28625.
