Coyet Raymond “Shorty” Adkins, 95, of Taylorsville, passed away in the Catawba Valley Hospice House, in Hickory, on Thursday, August 11, 2016. Born on May 17, 1921, to the late Effie Estelle Adkins and Clyde Wesley Church.
Coyet served in the United States Army (Anti-Aircraft Artillery Automatic Weapons Battalion) from July 1941-December 1945. Coyet owned & operated City Cab in Taylorsville and was employed by Lewittes Furniture.
Coyet was an active member of East Taylorsville Baptist Church for the past 70 years. He loved to build things in his workshop. He also loved to hunt and fish…but, most of all he would buy, sell and trade just about anything.
Including parents, he was preceded in death by brother, Arville Adkins, sisters, Edna Adkins Orren and Ollie Mae Adkins Brown, and granddaughter Mandy Hanes.
Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of 69 years Marie Pennell Adkins, two sons, Sammy Adkins and wife Frankie of Wittenburg, Darrell Adkins and wife Sharon of Hiddenite, three daughters, Anita Woods and husband George of Taylorsville, Janet Shoemaker and husband Tony of Wilkesboro, and Angelia Keever of Taylorsville, ten grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted Sunday, August 14, 2016, at East Taylorsville Baptist Church with Rev. Jamie Steele officiating. Visitation is from 1:30-3:00 and funeral service at 3:00. Burial will follow in the Taylorsville City Cemetery, with military rites provided by DAV Post 84 of Taylorsville & 6 of Hudson. Pallbearers will be grandsons.
