George Washington Wood Sr., age 85 of Taylorsville, passed away Monday, December 6, 2010 at Catawba Valley Hospice. Born February 21, 1925 to the late John Wood and Mertie Brown Wood of Wilkes County, he had been a self-employed auto mechanic and welder for most of his life and was a WWII United States Navy veteran. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two previous wives; Ruth Wood and Dorothy Wood; and 6 siblings; Lee, Charlie, Thomas, Martha, Eugene Wood, Mattie Sellenger and one half-brother, Floyd Wood. He is survived by four sons: George "Junior" Wood, Jr. and wife, Anita of Taylorsville, James Ray Wood and wife, Francis of Hickory; Otis Nelson "Sonny" Wood and wife, Alice of Claremont; Charlie Wood and wife from TN. One daughter, Doris Humphries and husband, Ray of Claremont. One brother Dollie Wood of Lexington; and one sister, Ila Roberts of Conover. Six half-brothers and sisters; Douglas, Leon, Wayne, Robert, Janie, and Susie Wood. He has 10 grandchildren, and 21 great-grandchildren, as well as a host of nephews and nieces. Visitation will be at Alexander Funeral Service on Wednesday, December 8, 2010 from 5-6pm, with a Memorial Service to follow at 6pm in the funeral home chapel. Rev. Jamie Steele officiating.
