Gladys Roberta Mayhew Vermillion

Gladys Roberta Mayhew Vermillion, affectionately known as "Birdie," age 80, passed away on Monday, February 3, 2025, at the Gordon Hospice House in Iredell County. Born on Monday, August 28, 1944, in Washington, D.C., she lived a life full of warmth, love, and cherished moments with those around her.

Birdie was a devoted family member; she loved her family deeply and cherished any time spent with her loved ones and friends. Her legacy is carried on by her children, Peggy Vermillion, David Lee Vermillion (Cindy), Charles Edward Vermillion, Rosie Keyes, Sue Foster, and William Joseph Vermillion. She also leaves behind her beloved grandchildren: Michael Winters (Amy), David Lee Vermillion Jr. (Brooke), Kayla Hess (Anthony), Ronnie Winters (Tajiah), and Sara Watts (Ethan). In addition to her grandchildren, Birdie was blessed with great-grandchildren Bryan, Madalynn, Brayden, Stella, Ariyah, Everlee, Rhylan, and Atticus, as well as a special great-granddaughter, Shirlee, whom she never got to meet. Special friends, Mary and Ronnie Hall, as well as several nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends are left to cherish the wonderful memories made with Birdie.

Throughout her life, Birdie engaged in various activities that brought her joy. She enjoyed playing a good game of rummy, solving crossword puzzles, and playing games on her tablet, always eager to challenge her mind. Birdie also had a deep appreciation for the outdoors, often finding peace and happiness in nature.

Birdie was a member of Sound Doctrine Baptist Church in Taylorsville.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Clearance and Catherine Bochner Mayhew, her husband John Vermillion, her brother Eddie Mayhew, and her sisters Ruth Stubbs, Marie Hardsty, and Phyllis Ann. Birdie also remembered her dear friend Shirley Tate who has passed.

A family led Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, February 8, 2025, at Sound Doctrine Baptist Church in Taylorsville at 1:00 pm. Pastor Jeff Webb will officiate. Inurnment will be with the family.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Gordon Hospice House, 2341 Simonton Road, Statesville, NC 28625.

Birdie’s spirit and the memories she created with her family and friends will be fondly remembered and cherished by all who knew and loved her. Her life was a testament to the importance of family, friendship, and love, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts of those she touched.
