Harold “Buster” Dean Hammer passed away peacefully at his home in Alexander County on March 30, 2025, at the age of 79. Born on July 28, 1945, in Catawba County, Harold was a proud veteran who dedicated part of his life to serving his country in The United States Army. His commitment to his nation was just one testament to his strength of character and devotion.
During his working career, Harold served as a supervisor at Clayton Marcus, where he was known for his leadership and dedication to excellence. His professional contributions were significant, and he earned the respect and admiration of his peers and employees alike.
A man of many talents, Harold thrived in his hobbies and interests, which included woodworking and carpentry work. His passion for building extended beyond mere creations; it encapsulated the very essence of his character—diligent, resourceful, and creative. Harold also relished opportunities to spend time outdoors, whether it was hunting or fishing, finding peace and fulfillment in nature.
He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Leita Shoft Hammer, his sons Richard Hammer, Harold "JR" Dean Hammer Jr., Cody Dwayne Hammer, and Buddy James Hammer; grandchildren: Arrianna Hammer, Nevaeh Hammer, Aubrey Hammer, and Harold "Dean" Hammer III; brother, Gary Hammer.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Harold Leach Hammer and Bessie Harriet Goforth Brooks, and his brother Larry Hammer.
A visitation will be held on Thursday, April 3, 2025, from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Alexander Funeral Service, located at 193 NC-16, Taylorsville, NC 28681. A funeral service will take place the following day, Friday, April 4, 2025, at 12:00 pm at Western Carolina Veterans Cemetery, located at 962 Old Highway 70 East, Black Mountain, NC 28711. Phil Goins will officiate. Military Rites will be provided
