Harold James Gwaltney, age 83, a beloved member of his family and community, was born on Saturday, December 27, 1941, in Alexander County. He passed away on Thursday, February 6, 2025, at Abernathy Laurels in Catawba County, leaving behind a legacy filled with laughter and love.
James was a man who adored a good joke and took pleasure in playing light-hearted pranks on those around him, bringing joy and smiles to countless faces. His vibrant personality was deeply rooted in his Baptist faith, which served as a guiding beacon throughout his life.
In addition to his passion for humor, James enjoyed a wide array of hobbies that showcased his zest for life. His adventurous spirit led him to explore scuba diving, fishing, and riding motorcycles. He enjoyed playing the guitar and also found solace in watching hummingbirds, which brought him peace and a sense of wonder.
James is survived by his cherished children: Debra Gwaltney Watts, Daniel Gwaltney (Molly), and Jeannie Gwaltney Grindstaff (Chris). He was a proud grandfather to eight grandchildren and a loving great-grandfather to nine great-grandchildren. These connections were of utmost importance to him and the source of much pride and joy in his life. He shared a close bond with his brothers, Wayne Gwaltney of Kirklan, WA, Kenneth Gwaltney of Kurtistown, HI, and JD Gwaltney (Hilda) of Hiddenite, NC.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Rosa Lee Marlow Gwaltney.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
In his passing, James made a remarkable contribution to the education of future healthcare professionals by donating his body to Duke University School of Medicine's Anatomical Gifts Program. This selfless act reflects his enduring commitment to serve and educate others.
