Harold J Harbert, 86 of Taylorsville, NC passed away unexpectedly early Tuesday morning at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem, NC. He had been in declining health the past several months but was a fighter and made remarkable strides the past few weeks in an aggressive rehab program, but suffered a traumatic head injury from a fall early Monday morning. This injury lead to his wishes for a quick and painless passing.
Harold was born March 1st, 1928 in Brown, Harrison County, West Virginia to the late Hallie Lafayette Harbert and Sylvia Dawn Marsh. He and his twin brother Hughie K Harbert were the youngest of their 6 children who all preceded Harold in death. He is survived by: his wife of 62 years, Mary Lou Hagen Harbert; twin sons Bruce Harbert and wife Rosey, and Brian Harbert and wife Alice; and five grandchildren: Jake & Jason; David, Rachel & husband Jon Daly, and Ryan. Harold was greatly anticipating the birth of his 1st great-grandchild, baby girl Daly, in February. He is also survived by his faithful canine companion, Pansy.
Harold proudly served in the U.S. Air Force. Upon his return he worked as an electrician for 25 years in Cleveland, Ohio and Broward County, Florida. He then began work as a city bus driver in Fort Lauderdale, FL. He continued his career as a bus driver when he moved to Charlotte, NC in 1979. After his retirement in 1993 he moved to Taylorsville, NC to be near his children and grandchildren. Harold loved people and never met a stranger. He always had a story to tell. He was a H.A.M. radio operator for many years. He loved travel. When at home, his favorite pastime was playing cards at the Alexander County Senior Center and at home with his family and friends.
