James “Jimmy” Dwight Chatham, age 76, passed away Thursday, August 31, 2023, at his home in Alexander County. He was born to the late Hugh Gordon Chatham and Novella Icenhour Chatham on Tuesday, October 29, 1946, in Alexander County. Mr. Chatham attended West Lenoir Bible College and was the first pastor of Goldsboro Ave Baptist Church. Jimmy was a member of Russell Gap Baptist Church and served as their preacher until he retired. He enjoyed woodworking, farming, gardening, and making gifts for others. Jimmy never met a stranger. He witnessed and encouraged people everywhere he went and had a servant’s heart. If everyone had a husband and father like Jimmy the world would be a better place.
Including his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Randy Chatham; brothers, Jerry, Earl, and Gene Chatham; sisters, Brenda Smith and Ann Gaither.
Those left to cherish the memories of Jimmy include his wife of 56 years, Jeannette Goodin Chatham; daughters, Robin Hays (Erik) and Tami Collins; sisters, Joyce Russell; brother, Tommy Chatham (Cathy); four grandchildren, Brittney Holland (Tyler), Emma Gregory (Justin), Adeline Harrington and fiancé Cole Everette, Jonathan Collins; five great-grandchildren, Charlie, Ava, Jackson, Sophia Holland, Rhenn Gregory; and a number of nieces and nephews.
A visitation will be held Saturday, September 2, 2023, at Russell Gap Baptist Church from 10:00 am to 11:00 am. The funeral will be held Saturday, September 2, 2023, at Russell Gap Baptist Church at 11:00 am. Burial will follow at Three Forks Baptist Church Cemetery. Rev. Keith Bowman and Rev. Michael Barber will officiate. Jonathan Collins, Erik Hays, Justin Gregory, Cole Everette, Steve Lane, and Tyler Holland will serve as pallbearers.
