James Michael “Mike” Steelman, age 74, passed away with the light of the morning coming through his window, with the birds feeding and squirrels playing and peacefully transitioned to Heaven on Sunday, October 30, 2022, at 10:45 am. He was born to the late James Henry Steelman and Electa Anderson Steelman on January 18, 1948, in Wilkes County. Mr. Steelman was a member of Cub Creek Baptist Church. Mr. Steelman was a veteran of the U.S. Army. Mike had a lifelong obsession with the outdoors. If it flew in the sky, lived in the woods or water it was fair game. But his passion was his children and grandchildren, passing on that love of the outdoors. He knew everything there was to know about coaching baseball and football. When able he never missed a game.
Including his parents Mr. Steelman is preceded in death by his brother, Charlie Steelman, and sister, Joanne Dancy.
Those left to cherish the memories of Mike include his wife of 53 years, Kay Johnson Steelman, sons, James “Keith” Steelman (Monica), Brandon Robert ”Stubby” Steelman (Jessica), three grandsons, James Thomas “J.T.” Steelman (Allison), Matthew Calvin Steelman, Samuel Robert Steelman, granddaughter, Savannah Brooke Steelman, brothers, Henry Steelman (Nena), Danny Steelman, Shirley Curry (Wayne), Bronda Pendergrass (Randy), Patsy Gochenour (Ken), Patricia Steelman (Kent), Dare Marley, and special fur baby, Bella, along with a number of nephews, nieces, great-nephews, and great-nieces.
A visitation will be held Wednesday, November 2, 2022, at Cub Creek Baptist Church, from 12:00 pm to 1:15 pm. The funeral service will be Wednesday, November 2, 2022, at Cub Creek Baptist Church at 1:30 pm. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Rev. Charles Younce and Rev. Barry Shew will officiate. Military rites will be provided by the U.S. Army, Ch. 84 and 6 DAV. Family will serve as pallbearers.
Flowers will be accepted, or memorials may be made to Wilkes Ministry of Hope Toy Store, 514 Elkin Hwy, North Wilkesboro, NC 28659.
