John Lee Mays

January 16, 1939 — April 15, 2019

John Lee Mays, age 80, of Taylorsville, passed away at his residence, Monday, April 15, 2019, following a period of declining health. Born to the late Ray E. and Bessie Lola Echerd Mays on January 16, 1939, John was a veteran of the United States Navy. Mr. Mays retired from Cargo Transport and in retirement, was employed by Alexander County Transportation for seven years. He will be remembered for his love of community and visiting the neighbors on his golf cart. He was “community watch”. He enjoyed his transportation years before and after retirement.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by an infant brother, Billy Ray Mays and later by his brother Bobby Mays.
He is survived by his wife of the home, Judy Mays and one son Ray Mays, of Taylorsville. Two sisters fondly miss him, Shelby McDaniel and Roberta Allen, both of Taylorsville. John has three nieces, Sonja McDaniel Carrigan, Debra Campbell, both of Taylorsville, and Robin Osborne of Mooresville.
He is survived by all his surviving class mates whom he counted as dear friends.
Visitation will be held on Thursday evening, April 18, 2019, from 7:00-8:30 p.m. at Alexander Funeral Service.
Inurnment in the Columbarium at St. Luke Lutheran Church will be announced at a later date.
