John Ivan Walser, 88, of Taylorsville, passed away Friday, July 8, 2022, in Union County. He was born to the late James and Mary Hinceman Walser in Rowan County. John attended Catawba College on scholarship where he played as their 6’8 1/2” basketball center. After graduating from Catawba College with a bachelor’s degree he attended UNC-Chapel Hill on academic scholarship earning a masters in education with an emphasis in math. He later used his education as a teacher for East Rowan High School, Vice President of Systems at Lewittes Furniture, and worked for Rowan County. He utilized his math education to assist government and industry in transforming to modern computing. John later enjoyed working with real estate, especially house renovation. He loved to see a house transformed from the old to the new.
During his free time, John enjoyed a variety of activities. John had an electrical license as his father before him. He enjoyed building projects including building his present home. John enjoyed talking with people as he he was out and about in the community at the hardware stores, grocery store, bank and other locales. He enjoyed hiking, nature, wildlife, sunsets, swimming, and western movies. Often, he could be seen walking near his home. He especially enjoyed spending time with his grandsons, often going to the park with them. John had a special love for family and will be sorely missed.
Along with his parents he is preceded in death by his wife of 53 years Betty Honbarrier Walser and a brother James “Jim” Walser.
Those left to cherish the memories of Mr. Walser include two sons Montgomery Walser (Alisa) and Harrison Walser (Corinne), two grandchildren: Harrison “Xander” Walser and Benjamin Walser.
The family would like to give a special thanks to caregivers Alice Johnson and Sarah Pennell. Also, the family offers their appreciation to East Taylorsville Baptist Church for ministering to Mr. Walser and the family.
A visitation for Mr. Walser will be held Friday, July 15, 2022, at Alexander Funeral Service from 2:00 pm to 2:45 pm. The funeral service will follow Friday, July 15, 2022, in the Alexander Funeral Service Chapel at 3:00 pm. Rev. Jamie Steele and Rev. Mark Marshall will officiate. Burial will follow in the Stony Point Cemetery.
