Joy Dawn Smith Pennell

Joy Dawn Smith Pennell, age 74, known for her kind heart and dedication to caring for others, passed away peacefully on Friday, May 24, 2024, at Amorem Hospice in Caldwell County. Joy was born on Friday, August 12, 1949, to the late Coy and Elizabeth Smith in Caldwell County. Joy's life was defined by her love for family and her nurturing spirit and was a member of Antioch Baptist Church.
 
During her working career, Joy served as a caregiver, touching the lives of many with her compassionate care. She found joy in looking after others and cherished the time spent with her grandchildren the most. 
 
Joy had a vibrant personality and a zest for life. She enjoyed gathering around campfires, spending time with her beloved cat, dancing to music that moved her soul, and enjoyed going out whenever she could. A nature enthusiast, she had a special fondness for the mountains, particularly Prices Park. Joy found solace in spontaneous adventures, embracing the thrill of exploring new places.
 
Including her parents, Joy was preceded in death by her daughter, Tabitha Smith.
 
Left to cherish Joy's memory are her surviving family members: daughter Tamila Miller; son Phillip Griffin (Kristina); grandchildren Kaylie Griffin, Avery Griffin, Faith Griffin, and Aiden Griffin. Joy's warm presence and loving nature will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
 
A private family Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
