Kay Johnson Durmire, age 71, of Hiddenite went to her heavenly home on Sunday, December 29, 2013 at Frye Regional Medical Center following a period of declining health. Born in Alexander County on September 7, 1942 to the late Robert and LB Johnson. Kay was a member of Sulphur Springs Baptist Church and was involved for many years with WOM -Women On a Mission. She had worked as a bookkeeper for 25 years at Rhodes Day Elledge Furniture and in the office at Heilig Myers, Alexander County Board of Education, Alexvale Furniture and then worked part-time at EnergyUnited Electric Corp. in Taylorsville. Kay loved to travel and spend time with her family, especially her husband, no matter where he went, she was always there right beside him. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her daughter: Kimberly Annette Durmire and son: Kevin Todd Durmire. Survivors include her husband of 45 years: Jerry Durmire of the home; sisters: Robbie Johnson Moore and husband Frank of Morganton and Sherry Johnson Mundy and husband James of Stony Point; brother: John Edward Johnson and wife Cindy of Hiddenite; nieces and nephews: Carla M. Mills and husband John of Wake Forest, Jamie Weaver, Jessica and Justin Mundy, and Kyle Fox; great nephews: Joshua and Christopher Mills of Wake Forest; uncle: Charlie Johnson; aunts: Hazel Morton and Pauline McCurdy and a number of cousins, other family members and special family friends: Eddie and Patty Honeycutt and son Jared.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, December 31, 2013 from 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm at Sulphur Springs Baptist Church. Service will be held on Wednesday, January 1, 2014 at 2:00 pm at Sulphur Springs Baptist Church with the Rev. Steve Parks, Rev. Mitch King, Rev. Eddie Honeycutt, and Dr. JD Grant officiating. The body will lie-in-state 30 minutes prior to service. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Serving as Pallbearers will be Scott, Rodney and Eric Sprinkle, Dwayne Durmire, Brent Smith, Justin Mundy, John Mills, Wes Smith and Bill Watkins. Honorary Pallbearers will be Directors and Employees of EneryUnited Water Corp.  Memorials may be sent to Kevin Todd Durmire - Memorial Fund: Sulphur Springs Baptist Church at 116 Patterson Rd; Hiddenite, NC 28636.
