Kenneth Kerley, age 88, of Taylorsville, passed away Tuesday, April 15, 2014 at Catawba Regional Hospice. He was born in Alexander County on March 25, 1926 to the late Dolphus Perry "DP" Kerley and Luella Mae Johnson Kerley. Kenneth served in the US Army Air Corp during WWII and as a military policeman. Kenneth retired as a foreman at Champion and Waldorf Corp. He was a lifelong member of Mt. Herman Baptist Church and served as a church deacon, Sunday school and Vacation Bible School teacher, and on the pastor search committee as well as the building committee. Kenneth was also involved actively with Gideon's International and was a charter member of Ellendale Ruritan Club. He also helped organize the Ellendale Community Fire Department, where he served on the Board of Directors. Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by wife, Florrie R. Kerley; brothers: Lonzo "Wyatt" Kerley, Roland Kerley, and Horace "H. A." Kerley; infant sister: Iris Kerley; half sister: Estelle Bebber; son: Doug Kerley; and son-in-law: Barry Johnson. Those left to cherish his memory include sons: Dr. Roger Kerley (Carol) of Mt. Airy, Guy Kerley (Connie) of Taylorsville; daughters: Martha Johnson of Taylorsville, Patsy Stewart (Lanny) of Taylorsville, Sharron Clanton (Ralph) of Albemarle, NC, and Robin Jones (Ronnie) of Taylorsville; daughter-in-law: Jan Kerley of North Wilkesboro; brother: Rev. Clyde Kerley (Diane) of Polkville, NC; 16 grandchildren; 21 great grandchildren; 1 step grandson; special sister-in-laws: Marie Kerley and Sidney Kerley; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be Wednesday, April 16, 2014 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Alexander Funeral Service. Funeral services will be held Thursday, April 17, 2014 at 3:00 p.m. at Mt. Herman Baptist Church with the Rev. Paul Schronce and Rev. Clyde Kerley officiating. Burial will take place at the church cemetery after the service. Pallbearers include grandsons. Full military rites will be provided by VFW Post 10,000 and Post 5466. Memorials may be made to Mt.
