Larry Ray Wilcox, age 79, of Taylorsville, passed away Saturday, October 4, 2014, following a brief illness in Carolina Med. Ctr. Born May 10, 1935, in Iredell Co. to the late Charlie and Daisy Estes Wilcox, he was a veteran of the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict. Larry was an active member of Berea Baptist Church, which he dearly loved. He was an avid gardener and loved going to flea markets. He was very fond of his many grandchildren. Larry attended High School at Scotts. He was retired from Hoechest-Celanese in Statesville.
In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Doris Norton Wilcox, as well as one brother, Dale Wilcox and one sister Kathy Beckham.
Survivors include, one daughter, Tammy Wilson and husband Rick of Statesville. Two sons, Michael Smith and wife Gladys of Stony Point and Jimmy Smith and wife Elaine of Statesville. Larry has four brothers, Donny, Ken, Tony and Cecil Wilcox, all of Statesville. He also has four sisters, Geraldine Justice and Sylvia Wallace of Statesville, as well as Margie Tyson of Mt. Gilead and Susie Miller of Troutman. There are nine grandchildren, Dana Russ, Jamie Davis, Jarred Smith, Justin, Kristen and Sarah Wilson, Michelle and Kelly Hoots and Edwina Hedrick. Larry has seventeen great-grandchildren, Landon, Allie and Madie Russ, Brian Wilson, Devin Babb, Riley Davis, Kyle Wilson, McKinsey Davis, Stephanie, Melia, Hanna, Evan, Carson, Adrian, and Kimberly Hoots, Brian Sigmon and Kendall Harrington. There are a host of nieces and nephews. Larry had a special friend, Gary Stikeleather.
Visitation will be held Wednesday evening, Oct. 8, 2014, from 7-9 p.m. at Berea Baptist Church and funeral services will be held Thurs. Oct. 9, at 1:00 p.m. at Berea Baptist Church with the Rev. Neil Walker and Rev. Jamie Fox officiating. Burial will follow in the Stony Point Baptist Church Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Micheal, Jimmy, and Jerrod Smith, Rick and Justin Wilson, and Landon Russ. Memorials may be given to the American Cancer Society, 250 Williams St. NW, Atlanta, GA. 30303.
