Leroy Thurston Hammer, age 93, of Taylorsville, passed away at Catawba Valley Medical Center on Sunday, January 31, 2016. He was the son of the late David Wilse and Carrie Teague Hammer. Mr. Hammer was born in Alexander County on August 31, 1922. Mr. Hammer served in the US Army during World War II as a Radio operator. He was a member of Macedonia Baptist Church. He loved to hunt, fish, read, and most of all spend time with his great grandchildren. Before retirement Mr. Hammer was self-employed as a carpenter.
In addition to his parents Mr. Hammer was preceded in death by his son Dale L. Hammer; brothers: Lex, Grover, and Ray Hammer; sisters: Leona Hammer, Cecil H. Burgess, and special friend Conrad Fox.
Those left to cherish his memory include: his wife of 69 years, Dorothy Warren Hammer, daughters: Janis H. Clark & husband Craven, Kathy H. Chapman & husband Gerald; grandchildren: Angela Clark, Sonia C. Pearson, Miriam C. Starnes & husband Todd, Eric Chapman & wife April, and Brian Hammer; great grandchildren: Mackenzie Pearson, Lauren & Grant Starnes, Drew & Isaac Chapman, Nelah Clark, Bradley Sharpe, and Josh Lovelace, and a number of nieces, nephews, and special friends.
Visitation will be 3:00-4:00 pm Wednesday, February 3, 2016 at Macedonia Baptist Church, 63 Macedonia Church Rd, Taylorsville, NC 2868l. The funeral service will follow at 4:00 pm. The Rev. Dan Spears and Tony Fox will be officiating. Burial will take place in the church cemetery. Pallbearers include Cameron Stikeleather, Shane Hammer, Scott Payne, Matthew Reese, Jeff Crouch, and Gary Kerley. Honorary pallbearers are Belva Bentley, Jerry Adams, Dennis Goins, Ray Sipe, and Creel Little. Full military rites will be provided by DAV chapter 84 of Taylorsville and Chapter 6 of Hudson.
