Mack Lendon Johnson, age 96 of Wilkes County passed away on Friday, April 6, 2018 at his residence. One of fourteen children born to Noah and Florence Church Johnson. He was born April 7, 1921 in the Brushy Mountain community of Wilkes County, North Carolina.
He was a member of Oakwoods Baptist Church for 71 years and was the oldest member in years and age. September 11, 1940, Mack enlisted in the United States Army at Fort Jackson, South Carolina, Company L, 13th infantry, 8th division. Mack served his country with distinction, while seeing action in the European theatre. He received medals for efforts in the Normandy, Northern France, and Rhineland campaigns. After being wounded in action he was transferred to Newton D. Baker Hospital in Martinsburg, West Virginia and received an honorable discharge on March 25, 1946. He was a successful poultry and cattle farmer. He devoted much time to his vegetable garden.
Along with his mother and father he is preceded in death by his brothers; Bryant, Woodrow, Owdis, Mayford, Glenn, Fred, Tommy, and Homer Johnson, sisters; Denver and Annie Johnson, Nellie Johnson Hayes and Mildred Johnson Woodie, son; Wayne Johnson and one infant son; Johnny Johnson.
Those left to cherish his memory are his wife of 72 years; Gracetene Treadway Johnson of the home, daughter; Linda Johnson Revis of Millers Creek, son; Bruce Johnson and wife Lorna of Wilkesboro, grandchildren; Laura Revis Elmore and husband Jeffrey of North Wilkesboro, Scott Revis of Millers Creek, Jessica Johnson Barlow and husband Lester of Wilkesboro, Kristen Johnson Yost and husband Matt of Charlotte, Megan Johnson of Millers Creek, great grandchildren; Katie Hubbard of North Wilkesboro, Colin and Camden Barlow of Wilkesboro, one brother; Richard Johnson and wife Eugina of Raleigh, North Carolina.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, April 8, 2018 at Oakwoods Baptist Church from 2:00 pm – 3:00 pm. The funeral will follow with the Rev. Robert Duncan officiating. Burial will be held in Walnut Grove Baptist Church cemetery. Military Rites will be provided by Post 1142 Honor Guard.
