Martha Elizabeth Jennings Carmack, age 93, of Kingsport, passed away in Holston Manor Nursing, on Monday, March 28, 2016. Born in Scott County, Virginia, at Natural Tunnel, to the late Echol and Catherine “Cassie” Powers Jennings on Dec. 3, 1922, she was a member of Victory Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her first husband and father of her children, Carl Edmond Jennings and later in life by her second husband Leon Carmack of Rogersville. She was preceded by a sister Ruby Jennings, and three brothers, Calvin, James Fred, and James Paul Jennings. She also was preceded by a son in law, Woody Newman of Gate City.
She was employed by Holston Valley Hospital in housekeeping and Quillen Interprises in Weber City.
She will be remembered as a wonderful homemaker and marvelous cook.
She is survived by a daughter, Patricia “Pat” Newman, of Yuma, Virginia, and a son, Rev. Gary W. Jennings and wife Linda of Taylorsville, NC. She has two granddaughters, Melissa Bowman and husband, Scott, as well as Heather Miller and husband Jamie. She has five great grandchildren, Katie, Jake, and Mollie Bowman, along with Rhett and Russell Miller, all of Taylorsville. She has several nieces, nephews and many cousins.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, April 2, from 12:00 to 1:00 p.m. at Oak Hill Funeral Home, in Kingsport with funeral services at 1:00 p.m. Burial will follow in Oak Hill Cemetery. The service will be family lead. Memorials may be made to New Tribes Mission, 1000 E. First St., Sanford, Fl. 32777-1487 and mark your check for Missionary Katherine Bowman, Asia-Pacific.
