Martha "Jean" Hines Smith, also known as "Lightning," age 82, of Hiddenite, passed away on Friday, January 27th, 2012.  She was born in Louisville, KY on February 27th, 1929 to parents Benjamin and Virgie Payne Hines.  She loved her pets and enjoyed shopping. She enjoyed listening to Elvis. Jean attended Freedom Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas R. Smith Sr. "Buddy"; 2 daughters: Margaret Jean Smith and Betty Jo Smith Holder; 1 son, Jeffrey L. Smith; in addition to numerous brothers and sisters.  Those left to cherish her memory include 6 sons: Thomas Smith and wife Becky of Hiddenite, Jerry Lee Smith of Taylorsville, John C. Smith and wife Beverly - also of Taylorsville, Jimmy R. Smith and wife Kathleen of Hiddenite, Joseph "Joe" Smith, and Gary L. Smith "Peewee" - both also of Hiddenite; 2 daughters: Helen S. Sipe of Taylorsville, and Lucy Smith of Hiddenite; and 1 brother: Walter "Sonny" Hines and wife Evelyn of Taylorsville. She also leaves behind 12 grandchildren: Betty Jean Holder and husband Trent of Alaska, Billy R. Holder and wife Amanda of Concord, Travis Smith and wife Billie of Hiddenite, Coty Smith and wife Krissy, Tylynn Benfield and husband Jerrod - both also of Hiddenite, Roger E. Sipe of Taylorsville, Daniel R. Sipe of Key West, FL, Brandy Honeycutt and husband David of Kings, NC, Emily Smith of Taylorsville, Joseph R. Brendle and wife Del of Conover, Roger L. Smith and wife Elisha of Taylorsville, and Breanna Bolick and special friend Mitchell Brown of Asheville; also, 16 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren in addition to special nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.  Visitation will be conducted on Monday, January 30th, 2012 at Freedom Baptist Church in Hiddenite from 2:00 - 4:00 P.M. Service will follow at 4:00 P.M. at the church where Rev. Sam Vallini and Rev. Jamie Steele will officiate.  Burial will follow in Sulphur Springs Baptist Cemetery.  In addition to flowers, memorials may be made to Freedom Baptist @ PO Box 542. Hiddenite, NC 28636.  Alexander Funeral Service has been entrusted with arrangements.
