Mary “Evelyn” Barnes Childers, age 79 of Taylorsville, passed away in Catawba Regional Hospice on December 23, 2012.  She was born to the late Osie Columbus and Bessie Lou (Walker) Barnes, and was the widow of James Franklin Childers.  She had been the Vice-president of Royal Comfort, and a member of Poplar Springs Baptist Church where she taught Sunday school and was a choir member.  She had also served as a Girl Scout Leader at one time. Those left to cherish her memories are a son Ricky Wayne Childers and wife Ellen; a daughter Tammy Stamey and husband Bill; three brothers Leon Barnes and wife Pat; O.C. Barnes and wife Barbra; and Jack Barnes and wife Scottie.  Four sisters Angelene Deal and husband Junior; Betty Icenhour; Joyce Watts and husband Jimmy, and Kathy Barnes.  Two granddaughters who attend USC – Columbia, Casey Childers, and Jessica Harrington and husband Scotty.   A step-grandson Jonathan Edwards and wife Amanda, and a step-granddaughter Stephanie Knupp and husband Stoney.  A step-great grandson Parker Knupp, and a step-great granddaughter Emma Edwards.  She also leaves behind a number of nieces, nephews, cousins, and other family members. Besides her husband and her parents, those who have preceded Mrs. Childers are two brothers Keither Barnes and Doris Barnes, as well as two sisters Ophelia Sherrill and Jean Cook.

Visitation for Mrs. Childers will be held Poplar Springs Baptist Church on Wednesday, December 26, 2012 from 1:30 pm to 3:00 p.m.  The Funeral service will begin at 3:00 p.m. with the burial to follow in the church cemetery.  Rev. Allen Fox and Rev. Rick Safriet will officiate. The family has requested that in lieu of flowers memorials may be made to any local Hospice organization of donor’s choice.
