Melvyn Winston Karriker, age 84, of Taylorsville, passed away Thursday, January 1, 2015, in Frye Regional Medical Center.  Born August 18, 1930, in Iredell County, to the late Ernest Martin and Katie Galliher Karriker, he was retired from Schneider Mills and in retirement was an associate at Walmart of Taylorsville for twenty years. He was a member of East Taylorsville Baptist Church, where he cared for the buildings and grounds, which he loved doing. He enjoyed meeting and greeting people wherever he went but especially at Walmart. In addition to yard work, he enjoyed watching wrestling and playing horseshoes.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Maria Woodring, and a sister Reba Parker.
He is survived by his wife Kathleen Goodman Karriker of the home. He is remembered by a sister, Sylvia Lail of Hildebran, and one son, Tim Karriker and wife Chieni, of Taylorsville. Melvin has four daughters, Shelia Durmire and husband James , Paulette Smith and husband Roy, all of Hiddenite and Kathy Bowles and husband Doyle and Lisa Robinette and husband David, all of Taylorsville. There are eleven grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren, along with a number of nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, January 4, 2015, at East Taylorsville Baptist Church, from 1:30-3:00 p.m. with funeral services at 3:00 p.m. Burial will follow in the Taylorsville City Cemetery. Rev. Jamie Steele, Rev. Gary Jennings, Rev. Mark Marshall and Rev. Kevin White will officiate. Pallbearers will be Will Durmire, Eric Smith, Jonathan Bowles, Wes Smith, David Robinette and T.J. Karriker.
