Raymond Jefferidge Kerley, age 88, or “Papaw Kerley” as he was known to many, passed away peacefully on Sunday, November 24, 2024, at the Gordon Hospice House in Iredell County.
Raymond is survived by his wife of 68 years, Joann Rogers Kerley and his three children: Jeff Kerley and his wife Debbie, Jennifer Robertson and her husband Robert, and Jonathan Kerley and his wife Pam. He is also survived by eight grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren, along with many nieces, nephews, cousins, and close friends.
Raymond was born on Sunday, August 23, 1936, in Alexander County to the late Clyde and Lena Icenhour. Throughout his life, Raymond was actively involved in his community. He served Jesus by serving others. He was a dedicated member of First Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon, helped in the church kitchen, drove and maintained the church bus, and provided general facility maintenance. He also loved serving his community as a member and Fire Chief at the Taylorsville Fire Department for many years.
Raymond was a long-haul truck driver, hauling produce up and down the East Coast for Bumgarner St. Clair Produce Company. He also worked with Brookshire and Associates for many years maintaining their laundromats and car washes.
Raymond enjoyed golfing, fishing, and playing cards. In later years, he and Joann enjoyed traveling. He loved being around his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, Raymond was preceded in death by his brother Conrad “Bud” Kerley (Lona), his grandson Jay Kerley, and his great-granddaughter Allie Grace Robertson.
Visitation will be held on Friday, November 29, 2024, from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm at Alexander Funeral Service, located at 193 NC-16, Taylorsville, NC. The funeral service in honor of Raymond’s life will take place Saturday, November 30, 2024, at 2:00 pm at First Baptist Church, located at 321 West Main Avenue, Township of Taylorsville, NC. Raymond will lie in state 30 minutes prior to the service. Rev. Scott Henson and George Hollemon will officiate. Burial will follow in the Taylorsville City Cemetery.
The family will accept flowers, or memorials can be made to First Baptist Church at 321 West Main Ave, Taylorsville, NC.
