Rev. Billy Lee Smith, age 84, of Stony Point, went home to be with the Lord at Iredell Memorial Hospital on December 21, 2012. Born on June 28, 1928 to the late William Marion and Lacy Settlemyre Smith. He was retired from Bassett and served in the US Army in the Korean War. Billy was a Pastor for 50 years in the NC District of the Church of God where he served seven churches; Thomas Street Church of God being where he last ministered. Including his parents, he is preceded in death by two sisters - Doris Newman and Florence Warren and one brother, Staff Sergeant, Fred W. Smith. Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of 60 years, Elwanda Hedrick Smith, of the home; four sons - Preston Smith and wife April, of Mooresville; Gary Thomas Smith and wife Betty, of Hiddenite; Kelly W. Smith, of Stony Point and Joel Smith, of Sneedsville, TN; 8 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. He is also survived by three brothers - Dean Smith and wife Dorothy, of Conway, SC; Don Smith and wife Jean, of Statesville; and Bobby Smith and wife Pat, of Mooresville; one sister - Betty S. Rowland and husband Earl, of Salem, SC; and a number of nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, December 26, 2012 from 12:00 pm - 2:00 pm at Thomas Street Church of God, in Stony Point and the Service will follow at 2:00 pm with the Rev. Howard Smith, Rev. Jerry Varner and Rev. Ken Nelson officiating. The body will lie in state from 9:00 am until the service begins. Burial will follow at the church cemetery with military rites provided by the DAV Chapter 84 of Taylorsville and Chapter 6 of Lenoir. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Thomas Street Church of God - Building Fund at Po Box 133, Stony Point, NC 28678.
