Robert Franklin Austin, age 73, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, friend, passed away peacefully at his home in Alexander County on Thursday, November 14, 2024. Born on Monday, November 12, 1951, in Caldwell County, Robert dedicated much of his life to his family and his work in the furniture industry as a framer for Clayton Marcus.
Robert's life was deeply intertwined with his faith and community. He faithfully attended the Hiddenite Church of God, which provided him with both spiritual guidance and a sense of belonging. His devotion to his church was only rivalled by his profound love for his family. He cherished every moment spent with them, particularly his grandchildren, to whom he imparted wisdom and joy.
His hobbies reflected his zest for life; he was known as a horse and cow trader with an undeniable flair for the trade. Robert found delight in riding horses and relished the thrill of engaging in trades of all kinds. He was a man of many interests, yet it was the time shared with loved ones that he treasured most.
He leaves behind his devoted wife of 52 years, Sandra Shull Austin, who has been his rock through the years. He is also survived by his daughter Denita Stafford, and sons Todd Austin (Becky) and Jeffrey Thrift, along with Blain Thrift. His legacy lives on through his siblings: sisters Sue Austin Land (Tommy), Kay Austin Baker, and brother Ray Austin (Barbara). The bonds of family extend to his sisters-in-law, LaDonn Watkins (Sam), Martha Brogdon (Rick), and Lena Austin Pennell. Robert was a proud grandfather to Zachary Stafford, Vanessa Shook, Eden Austin, Eli Austin, and Josh Thrift, and he found immense joy in the playful laughter of his great-grandchildren, Lukas and Nora Shook. A dear family friend, Flaxen Reid, will also miss him greatly.
He was preceded in death by his cherished parents, Elijah Nathan Austin and Cordelia Frazier Austin, and he was also preceded by his son Randy Thrift and brother Wayne Austin. Each of these losses shaped Robert's resilience and compassion for others.
Robert Franklin Austin's visitation will be held on Sunday, November 17, 2024, from 1:00 pm to 2:45 pm at Alexander Funeral Service. The funeral service will be held in the Alexander Funeral Service Chapel at 3:00 pm. Burial will follow in the Taylorsville City Cemetery. Rev. Dennis Crowder, Rev. Rick Brogdon, and Rev. Samuel Watkins will officiate. Zach Stafford, Eli Austin, Tyler Crowder, Wesley Shook, Darin Austin, and Doyle Austin will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be Dale Austin, Jimmy Austin, Randy Hamby, Carrol Reid, and Kenneth White.
The family will accept flowers, or donations may be made to Alexander Hospice, 50 Lucy Echerd Lane, Taylorsville, NC 28681.
As we gather to celebrate the life of Robert, we remember a man whose heart was always open, whose laughter was contagious, and whose love for his family knew no bounds. His spirit will forever be cherished by those who had the privilege of knowing him.
