Vance Eartle Hammonds, age 78, of the Wittenburg Community, passed away Sunday, May 25, 2014, following a lengthy illness. Born Aug.9, 1935, in Robeson Co. NC, to the late, Woodrow Wilson and Julia Thelma Rebels Hammonds, he was of the Baptist faith. He was owner operator of Hammonds and Hammonds Trucking until his retirement. Vance loved hunting and fishing at the family’s cabin in Michigan, and counted those years as some of his happiest. He prided himself as a professional driver, owning his own truck. In addition to his parents, he was preceded by a son, Vance Lee Hammonds. Survivors include his wife, of 29 years, Ruby Ellen Eldreth Hammonds of the home. He is also survived by three daughters, Julia Hammonds of New Baltimore, Mich., Deanna Acosta, of Algonac, Mich. And April Hammonds, of Frazier, Mich. He has two step children, Debra Seagraves, W. Jefferson, NC and Timothy Tobin, of Lansing, NC. He will be remembered by five grandchildren, 4 step grandchildren, and 1 step grandchild. Vance has two sisters, Doshia Sheffield of Roseville, Mich., And Alice Faye Schnider, of Laura Hill, NC. Two brothers, Eartle Ray Hammonds of Lumberton, NC and Hollis Dean Hammonds of Clinton Township, Mich. He has a host of nieces and nephews.
No formal services are planned at this time, and following inurnment with the family, a scattering service is planned for the woods and waters of Michigan which he so dearly loved.
