Wanda Faye Bowman Johnston, age 72, of Taylorsville, passed away at her residence on Thursday, October 11, 2012. Born in Catawba Co. on June 5, 1940 to the late Vernon Maynard and Edith Faye Herman Bowman, she was a lifelong member of Mt. Pisgah Lutheran Church in Bethlehem, where she had the distinction of being the first lady to serve on the church council as well as being an active choir member, Sunday school teacher, and was faithful to accompany the youth of the church on trips and activities, as well as providing their meals. Wanda loved all things gardening, canning, cooking and was a talented seamstress. She loved art and had learned to paint. Mrs. Johnston was a beautician for most of her life. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by two sisters; Jewel Bowman Williams, and Joyce Bowman Fox. She is survived by her husband of fifty-six years, Ronnie Johnston of the home, a son Joseph Mark Johnston, a daughter, Celeste Thick all of Taylorsville. Wanda has four grandchildren, two step-grandchildren and two great grand-children, as well as one yet unborn. She has one sister, Dorothy Bowman Parker of Shelby, NC and one brother, Vernon Maynard Bowman of Hickory. She has a number of nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at 5:00 p.m. on Monday, October 15, 2012 at Mt. Pisgah Lutheran Church in Bethlehem. Inurnment will be in the columbarium of the Church. Rev. Mike Stone will officiate. There will be no formal visitation. Memorials may be given to Mt. Pisgah Lutheran Church Building Fund @ 9379 NC Hwy 127, Hickory, NC, 28601, or Catawba Regional Hospice @ 3975 Robinson Rd., Newton NC, 28658.
