William (“Bill”) H. Mohney, 92, of Bethlehem passed away at his home on November 17, 2015. Bill was born on December 29, 1922 in DuBois, Pennsylvania, the son of John H. and Mary (Heller) Mohney. He was a graduate of Brookville High School in Pennsylvania and the State University of New York at Cobleskill. Bill enlisted in the Army in World War II, following the example set by his older brothers. Prior to his departure for the European Theatre, he married Jane Kirkpatrick in July 1944 in Lyons, New York.
After his discharge, Bill and Jane moved to Ithaca, New York where he attended Cornell University and received a Bachelor of Science degree. In 1950, Bill took a teaching position at York Central School in Retsof, New York. During his 30 years at York, he taught agriculture, science and biology, and earned his Master’s degree at the State University of New York at Geneseo. The Mohney family lived in Butere, Kenya from 1966 to 1968 where Bill taught science at Butere Girl’s School. This overseas experience was a result of a relationship with the Episcopal Diocese of Rochester, New York and the Diocese of Maseno, Kenya. In 1969, Bill and Jane accompanied a group of high school students from the Rochester area on a six-week work program in Haiti. Later, they returned to Kenya and climbed Mount Kilimanjaro. After his retirement from teaching, Bill and Jane served in the Peace Corps in St. Lucia. Upon their return, they moved to Hickory to establish The Hickory Bed and Breakfast that they operated until 1991 when they moved to Bethlehem.
Bill is survived by his wife Jane and children: Susan of La Mesa, California; David (Bonita) of New York City, New York; Stephen of Brooklyn, New York; Kirk (Melanie) of Gardiner, Maine; grandson, Zachary Mohney; granddaughters, Emma Mohney and Helen Mohney; sister-in-law Carol (Baker) Mohney; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his brothers, John 0. Mohney, Franklin H Mohney, and Robert L. Mohney and his sister Martha J. (Mohney) Halverson. Funeral services will be held on December 5, 2015, at 100O a.m. at the Church of the Ascension, 726 1st Avenue N.W., Hickory, North Carolina. Burial will be in the Dell Memorial Garden at the Church of the Ascension. The family will receive Friends in the Parish Hall following the service.
